Kombiverkehr KG creates capacities in Brenner transport
  • Re-introduction of a direct train between Lübeck and Verona
  • Two round trips per week in direct service, three round trips via Hamburg
  • Switch to rail possible during the renovation of the Lueg Bridge

(Frankfurt/Main, January 23, 2025) Kombiverkehr KG is creating additional capacity in its Europe-wide intermodal network between Germany and Italy. As of this month, freight forwarders and logistics companies can once again have their trailers, swap bodies and containers transported between the port of Lübeck and Verona in northern Italy on a direct train connection, which the Frankfurt-based operator has once again added to its timetable. The service calls at the Baltic Rail Gate Terminal at Skandinavienkai in Lübeck and the Verona Quadrante Europa terminal. The trains run north-south on Thursdays and Sundays and south-north on Tuesdays and Fridays with attractive pick-up and drop-off times at the departure and arrival destinations. Kombiverkehr KG offers additional connections in so-called gateway traffic via Hamburg on three days. From Verona, there are connections to the south of Italy, and from the port of Lübeck to and from Sweden and Norway. The transportation of waste and hazardous goods of all classes except 1 and 7 is possible.

“Our capacity expansion comes at the right time for transport companies that are facing major challenges in Brenner traffic due to the renovation of the Lueg Bridge,” says Arbi Tonians, Manager Southern Europe Sales at Kombiverkehr KG. Since 1 January 2025, road traffic over the 1.8-kilometre-long Lueg Bridge will often only have one lane for safety reasons. The general renovation of the more than 50-year-old structure near Gries am Brenner will begin in March and is scheduled to last until the end of 2030. “Our rail services via the Brenner can be a relief for freight forwarding companies. In traffic with Verona alone, we offer daily departures, and even several train departures a day from some terminal locations. Destination terminals in Germany besides Lübeck are Munich, Cologne, Ludwigshafen, Hanover, Hamburg, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Rostock,” says Tonians.

Twice a week and direction direct and three times via Hamburg in gateway traffic: Frankfurt-based Kombiverkehr KG is creating new rail capacity in cooperation with Munich-based Lokomotion GmbH for Italian traffic between Lübeck and Verona.
